Tenclave

Tenclave aims to build a modular open-source trusted enclave capable of applying programmable cryptography techniques—such as Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) and Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE)—to multiple data sources without exposing raw data. Centered on energy efficiency, the project will deliver two reference implementations in a real-world Local Energy Community (LEC) living lab in Peón, Spain:
- ZKP-based energy flexibility settlement: users prove consumption reductions to receive rewards, enabling demand-response services at both microgrid and network levels.
- FHE-powered battery output computation: encrypted consumption and storage data are processed in real time to optimize cost, efficiency, and return on investment.
An open architecture will provide modules for data gathering (connecting to CTIC’s data space and a LoRaWAN deployment), data harmonization, programmable cryptography services, and blockchain connectivity for verifiable settlement. A human-centric approach (UCA Framework) ensures stakeholder co-creation, cultural value integration, and iterative UX validation. By leveraging previous TRL5 research and TrustChain ecosystem components Tenclave will reach TRL7, showcasing privacy-preserving, interoperable energy applications that can be replicated across other domains.

- Motivation for the project: Tenclave’s modular trusted enclave applies programmable cryptography (ZKPs, FHE) to ensure secure data interoperability and verifiable results without exposing energy data, addressing privacy and transparency.
- Generic use case description: A ZKP-based energy flexibility layer proving consumption reduction for LEC rewards, and an FHE-enabled service computing encrypted battery output in real time to optimize energy costs and efficiency.
- Essential functionalities: Modules for data gathering from open-source sources; data harmonization into common formats; programmable cryptography services (ZKPs, FHE) on encrypted data; and blockchain connection for settlement, coordination and verifiable exploitation of enclave results.
- How these functionalities can be integrated within the software ecosystem: Tenclave is specially designed to apply programmable cryptography techniques in the energy efficiency sector, but it can be applied elsewhere by the other solutions i9n the TrustChain ecosystem. Tenclave will be designed to use as many tools of the Trustchain ecosystem as possible.
- Gap being addressed: Absence of scalable, privacy-preserving platforms in energy efficiency: no unified framework exists to apply programmable cryptography across heterogeneous data sources, hindering secure, interoperable data management and verifiable coordination in energy communities.
- Expected benefits achieved with the novel technology building blocks: Enhanced data privacy and transparency; verifiable energy flexibility settlements; real-time encrypted battery management improving energy efficiency and cost; replicable modular enclave for other domains; and socioeconomic gains via reduced energy surplus and greater trust in LECs.
- Potential demonstration scenario: Deployment in Peón’s Local Energy Community: ZKP-based proof of demand response to reward households for consumption reduction; FHE-encrypted battery output calculations to optimize storage usage; all orchestrated via a LoRaWAN network and integrated blockchain settlement.
