SSITIZENS is an innovative initiative designed to leverage secure digital identity and blockchain technology to improve social inclusion and streamline the delivery of public services and social aid. Developed within the European NGI TrustChain framework, the project addresses the dual challenges of ensuring accessibility for vulnerable citizens and increasing the efficiency of administrative processes for public institutions.
At its core, SSITIZENS integrates self-sovereign identity (SSI) solutions with blockchain-based e-money tokens. Using digital identity standards such as EBSI and Alastria ID, the system enables citizens to securely authenticate themselves and receive verifiable credentials. These credentials allow for faster and safer interactions with public institutions, such as applying for social benefits or accessing municipal services.
Additionally, SSITIZENS introduces an e-money token framework to facilitate transparent and efficient disbursement of social aid. Vulnerable citizens can use these tokens to make purchases at participating local merchants, who in turn can redeem the tokens for real money through the City Council. This approach not only ensures traceability and compliance but also supports local economic activity.
- Motivation for the project: The project addresses the need for secure, efficient, and inclusive systems by integrating blockchain and SSI. It enhances transparency, accessibility, and trust in public service and aid delivery, supporting vulnerable citizens while ensuring compliance with European standards.
- Generic use case description: SSITIZENS enables vulnerable citizens to securely authenticate using SSI and access social benefits via blockchain-based e-money tokens. The system ensures transparent aid distribution, simplifies interactions with public services, and supports local merchants through token redemption.
- Essential functionalities: SSITIZENS offers essential functionalities including secure digital identity, verifiable credentials, e-money token management, a trust framework, and integration services.
- How these functionalities can be integrated within the software ecosystem: These functionalities integrate within the ecosystem by using blockchain for secure identity and e-money token management. Verifiable credentials interact with municipal systems via APIs, while the trust framework ensures compliance. Integration services enable seamless communication, enhancing efficiency and transparency.
- Gap being addressed: The gap being addressed is the lack of secure, efficient, and inclusive access to public services and social aid for vulnerable citizens. SSITIZENS bridges this gap, ensuring easy, secure, and transparent access to essential resources when the citizen needs it.
- Expected benefits achieved with the novel technology building blocks: The expected benefits of the novel technology building blocks include enhanced security, privacy, and control for citizens through blockchain-based digital identities. E-money token management ensures transparent, efficient distribution of social aid. Overall, the system promotes inclusion, reduces bureaucracy, and improves accessibility to services.
- Potential demonstration scenario: The potential demonstration scenario involves vulnerable citizens using blockchain-based digital identities and verifiable credentials to access public services and apply for social aid, receiving e-money tokens. Local merchants will accept e-money tokens, which can be exchanged for real currency at the City Council, showcasing the system’s efficiency and inclusivity.
