EARTH

The existing EU building stock represents the main challenge for efficient energy use, considering that buildings account for 40% of the total energy consumption and almost 75% of them are energy inefficient. In 2018, the EU policy response amended the Energy Efficiency Directive forcing EU countries to achieve new end-use annual energy savings of at least 0,8%, by establishing national Energ Efficiency Obligation Schemes (EEOS) . In this rapidly deteriorating context, EEOS obligated parties (energy suppliers & utilities, governmental bodies) are actively investigating cost- effective measures for improving the energy efficiency and comfort in residential buildings and reducing the costs of end- use.
DOMX offers a cost-effective and universal retrofit IoT product that is able to deliver up to 30% of energy savings and shift energy use to times of lower market prices, without affecting the occupants’ thermal comfort. DOMX products and services can offer unique advantages to European Energy Suppliers, by delivering remarkable energy and cost savings for end users and thereby improving their customer loyalty and satisfaction, while enabling the quantification of achieved performance under various KPIs at consumer portfolio level.
Through the EARTH project, DOMX aims at expanding the company’s current offering through an innovative layer of technologies featuring smart contracts, tokens, smart oracles and decentralised identity assets, to establish a secure, privacy-preserving, and trustful mechanism for incentivizing energy efficiency and sustainability for the residential heating sector. The EARTH framework will target i) consumers, allowing them to monitor their achieved energy savings and comfort based on trustworthy data, ii) Energy Suppliers, providing them with a reliable, automated and verifiable reporting mechanism to facilitate their alignment with emerging obligatory schemes (EEOS) and enhance customer retention and acquisition and iii) Authorities entitled to verify the reported metrics empowering them with a secure, trustful and universal service for energy efficiency reporting.

- Motivation for the project: DOMX products and services focus on residential energy management, delivering unique advantages not only to the end consumers, but primarily to the Energy suppliers. Through the EARTH project, DOMX aims at improving the company’s existing products and services, through a secure, privacy-preserving, and trustful mechanism for incentivizing European Energy Suppliers in implementing and assessing energy efficiency investments for the residential heating sector.
- Generic use case description: DOMX offers a cost- effective and universal retrofit IoT product that can deliver up to 30% of energy savings, without affecting the occupants' thermal comfort. Key energy stakeholders (suppliers, facility managers, authorities, etc.) get access to key energy (demand, efficiency, savings) and non-energy data (climate comfort), enabling real-time monitoring and management of space heating demand at scale. EARTH will expand the company’s current offering through an innovative layer of technologies featuring smart contracts, tokens, smart oracles and decentralised identity assets, following identity standards and data regulations. The framework targets i) consumers, allowing them to monitor their achieved energy savings and thermal comfort based on trustworthy data, ii) Energy Suppliers, providing them with a reliable, automated and verifiable reporting mechanism that will facilitate their alignment with emerging obligatory schemes (EEOS, NECP) and enhance customer retention and acquisition and iii) Authorities entitled to verify the reported metrics empowering them with a secure, trustful and universal service for energy efficiency reporting.
-
Essential functionalities: EARTH aims to extend and improve the DOMX energy efficiency service and general offerings with 6 security, privacy and accountability through:
- trustworthy digital identities in commercial devices, following the SSI concept (DIDs, VCs)
- energy-efficiency tokenisation for transparency, auditability and verifiability
- smart contracts for automation and integrity of the reporting scheme - How these functionalities can be integrated within the software ecosystem: The DOMX controllers (commercial product) will be enhanced with identity agents that will use DIDs and VCs to identify themselves when interacting with the DOMX platform. The collected energy and non-energy data will be analyzed and verified through a well- established easurement and Verification (M&V) methodology to alculate the performance improvement (savings, efficiency, comfort). The AI-based data verification mechanism (smart oracle) will be based on the DOMX’s ML-based framework, 7 which produces the digital twin representation of gas boilers. The derived improvements will be verified by the data management and verification module, before being fed to the smart contracts to calculate KPIs and generate tokens for a trustworthy and automated energy reporting.
- Gap being addressed: DOMX offers a cost-effective and universal retrofit IoT product that is able to deliver up to 30% of energy savings and shift energy use to times of lower market prices, without affecting the occupants' thermal comfort. DOMX products and services can offer unique advantages to European Energy Suppliers, by delivering remarkable energy and cost savings for end users and thereby improving their customer loyalty and satisfaction, while enabling the quantification of achieved performance under various KPIs at consumer portfolio level.
- Expected benefits achieved with the novel technology building blocks: The EARTH framework will target i) consumers, allowing them to monitor their achieved energy savings and comfort based on trustworthy data, ii) Energy Suppliers, providing them with a reliable, automated and verifiable reporting mechanism to facilitate their alignment with emerging obligatory schemes (EEOS) and enhance customer retention and acquisition and iii) Authorities entitled to verify the reported metrics empowering them with a secure, trustful and universal 8 service for energy efficiency reporting.
- Potential demonstration scenario: The mature pilot population of DOMX end users from more than 100 households that have already been engaged in relevant research activities will be used as the demonstration scenraio. Targeted co-creation sessions with representative pilot user types will take place in a workshop format, in order to drive the design of the data-driven services building on relevant co- creation activities executed in research projects (NUDGE, DEDALUS). In addition, various means for increasing user participation will be employed, such as the delivery of personalized feedback to end users through the smartphone app (e.g. push notifications, contribution to social targets, environmental impact).
