DID4EU : Decentralized Identity Infrastructure for Europe
DID4EU stands for Decentralized Identity Infrastructure for Europe. This project extends walt.id’s existing open source infrastructure.
The walt.id identity repo is part of The Community Stack, walt.id’s collection of open-source products to build identity and wallet solutions. Learn more here.

- Motivation for the project: The proposed project to result in holistic open source decentralized identity tools for developers and organizations. Moreover, the tools are aligned with emerging EU regulations like eIDAS2.
- Generic use case description: The solution enables diverse identity use cases across industries (banking, tech, education, employment, supply chain, health care, public sector, web3) including e.g. customer onboarding, consumer and organization identity verification, digital diplomas and student IDs, 1-click job applications and background checks, eCommerce check out among others. Check out case studies here: https://walt.id/case-studies
- Essential functionalities: The solution enables developers and organizations to create, issue, manage and verify digital identity documents from different identity ecosystems, aligned with global standards and regulations.
- How these functionalities can be integrated within the software ecosystem: The solution will be available under the permissive Apache 2 licence as well as accessible via a managed service (cloud/SaaS). As such, the tools can be directly integrated into codebases in various languages or used as microservices and via APIs.
- Gap being addressed: The project will add new capabilities to our open source infrastructure such as functionality required by the upcoming eIDAS2 regulation e.g. support for m-docs/mobile driver’s licence. Also, the project will be used to make our codebase available for multiple platforms / programming languages (multi-platform).
- Expected benefits achieved with the novel technology building blocks: The main benefit lies in enabling developers to quickly and easily build end-to-end use cases with decentralized identity and identity wallets across different identity ecosystems and regions.
- Potential demonstration scenario: There will be demo applications. Moreover, our users/customers will launch applications that demonstrate the infrastructure in different industries/use cases.
